Nationwide Mutual Insurance
Essential
Our cruise was canceled by the cruise company, and while they reimbursed the cost, this led to a rearrangement of our travel plans, resulting in additional costs and forfeited non-refundable airline tickets. Nationwide denied coverage for all these expenses, claiming that a common carrier breakdown is not a covered reason, which seems completely counterintuitive. They also rejected reimbursement for additional expenses related to our changed travel plans, stating that the cruise cancellation occurred before the scheduled travel date, and thus trip interruption or trip delay not being applicable.
We understand that the details are often in the fine print. However, not being experts in legal matters, we expected the insurance company to support us in a situation that seems to involve common sense, which our circumstances certainly do. I will review the fine print further, but in any case the outcome is most definitely not what a reasonable consumer would anticipate when purchasing travel insurance.
We are deeply dissatisfied with our purchase, with Nationwide, and with how the insurance company handled this situation.
