Travel Insurance Reviews for Travelex Travel Select

I've purchased Travelex Select from InsureMyTrip.com for my last 10 vacations and never had a claim. In August 2012, on a cruise ship somewhere off the Mexican Coast I suffered a heart attack in the middle of the night. After the E.R. Physician on board saved my life, I spent the next 11 days in a private hospital in Cabo San Lucas getting some of the best treatment available anywhere. Thankfully, my health insurance covered my very expensive bills from the hospital and what wasn't covered by them was covered by Travelex and Stonebridge. Please let me share the following tips for all:

1. ALWAYS ensure your U.S. health insurance plan covers you outside the U.S. Some plans do not, mine did and that was fortunate since the contracted hospital submitted bills totaling $219,000 U.S.

2. Understand that treatment provided on board is not generally covered under any plan. My bill was over $4,000.00 for three hours of treatment that saved my life.

3. Make sure someone keeps meticulous notes on expenses and receipts for everything. DO NOT expect to be reimbursed if you cannot prove you paid the bill.

4. Ask for copies of receipts and medical records from everyone that treats you. You'll need them for your claim!

As for my experience overall. My wife kept perfect notes and collected everything we needed. My family stayed at a local hotel to be close by just in case. Travelex and On Call stayed in touch with us throughout, arranged our return flights home and we submitted our claim with all the required paperwork received by them on September 14th, 2012. Our claim was processed quickly and efficiently and because our documentation was complete all of our expenses, trip interruption and medical expenses, were approved in full and we received our check for nearly $10,000.00 on October 13th. 2012. My premium was just $133.00 for my entire family. You tell me if it was worth it this time!

I can highly recommend Travelex and Stonebridge and applaud their professionalism. I never leave home without travel insurance and never will in the future. But please follow my tips above. No receipts, no reimbursement and ALWAYS download and read the contract BEFORE you buy. There is a reason travel insurance costs are so varied, they each cover different things. Don't assume, check whether everything you want covered is covered and there will be no surprises! Three days before our trip to the Galapagos, my brother-in-law passed away. The cruise company refunded our cruise, but we could not use it for a Galapagos trip...AND we had to take one cruise. In other words, if the Galapagos trip cost $6K and we decided to take a trip for $4K, we would lose the $2K. I was instructed to submit the cruise vouchers to the insurance company--they dealt with Celebrity Cruises--and we received a check for the full amount. The trip was very expensive. We were SO grateful we had the insurance. They processed the claim quickly and it was resolved and behind us. Will use them from now on on every trip we book.

We had terrific service with Travelex. Filing a claim was very easy. The required documentation was simple and readily available. Our claim was paid promptly in full. We will definitely use Travelex again.

My son and I both had to visit the ship doctor. I paid for our visit and the meds out of pocket. When I returned home, I simply called the number listed on my policy. I was immediately emailed forms that had to be completed and mailed in. About 3 weeks later, I received a check in the mail for the full amount! This insurance is a no-brainer, in my opinion.

First off, I definitely recommend travel insurance overall it takes so much stress out of the 'what ifs' that come up while traveling. My only issue with my plan was that as secondary insurance I had to cover the healthcare costs out of pocket and wait to be reimbursed, because of this I couldn't afford to have some of the blood tests done that the doctor recommended. This might have been different if I had gone to an ER instead of the urgent care clinic that I went to. They were prompt with handling my claim and I had no issues with the claim. I would recommend this plan to friends and family I would just make sure that they were traveling with extra funds available in case something like this were to come up because it was very stressful and put a definite strain on my vacation to come up with the money for my office visit, blood tests and lab work out of pocket.

I made a claim via e-mail while in Italy for luggage delay of 2 days. Pretty quick response by e-mail and followup after I returned home. Quick and fair settlement of the few charges ($51) that we incurred for essentials while awaiting our luggage.

We had scheduled a very expensive trip to the Arctic, but I had open heart surgery instead, which was a big surprise. Travelex was great and fairly prompt in paying the full amount of our coverage after a phone call or two.
Even though we didn't use it, I would strongly advise others to purchase cancel for any reason coverage and remind them that it is only good up to three days before the trip. Life is very unpredictable and there are a lot of exclusions in regular travel insurance, so buy the extra coverage.

Our return to home flight was cancelled due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland in late May/2011. We were delayed 4 days until I purchased return tickets for my wife and me. The total cost of the tickets, additional lodging and meal expenses ( all of which were documented) were reimbursed to me within aprox one month of our return. I couldn't ask for better service. I also must thank the people at InsureMyTrip for their help in getting into contact with and follow through with Travelex.

Our travel companion got Cancer and we had to cancel our trip. We were refunded all of our money. thank you.

We purchased the insurance within a few days of our deposit, so we were eligible for the cancel for any reason coverage. About 2 months before our trip, I broke my leg and was unable to travel. We were promptly reimbursed for our full airfare and the non-refunded portion of our cruise cost.
