Basically, the plan coverage was far less than I had expected. In the end we cancelled our trip at the earliets penalty deadline because of mounting EU/Italy/Covid uncertainties. We cancelled in time to avoid most penalties. We could not cancel several train tickets and resceduling was a nonstarter. Our claim was thus relatively minor (less than 5% of trip cost) and less than half of the premium paid. It seemed like a fair claim.

Lesson: Read the fine print which, it turns out, eliminated all the threats that I thought were most likely and needed to be insured.

    We empathize with your situation. It is important to remember that insurance is highly regulated and all claims are determined based on the documentation submitted and the policy details for the policy purchased. Travelex Insurance and Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company, the claim administrator, are required to follow the policy. The policy purchased is a Named Peril Policy, which means that any eligible reason for cancellation is listed in the policy. The policy itself does list which Named Perils would be covered (which you can view by clicking “view certificate” on the Insure My Trip website). Unfortunately, uncertainties and fears related to travel are not covered reasons under the policy (and would not be covered events for most policies).

My claim was approved and paid promptly. Documentation was easy to provide. The insurance did exactly what it was supposed to. I would buy it again.

A claim was submitted because there was a trip interruption during the cruise in that a port of call was not fulfilled due to weather, a valid condition. Travelex did not honor the claim basically saying that the cruise itself was not interrupted. However, we would not have incurred this additional expense for this port if it were not originally listed in the itinerary. I thought I had appropriate protection coverage only to find out this was not the case. BUYER BEWARE!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!

    With the Travelex Travel Basic policy, weather-related claims would only be covered if the following had occurred:

    Trip Cancellation / Trip Interruption:
    3. Common Carrier delays resulting from inclement weather, or mechanical breakdown or organized labor strikes that affect public transportation.
    4. arrangements cancelled by an airline, cruise line, motor coach company or tour operator, resulting from inclement weather, mechanical breakdown or organized labor strikes that affect public transportation.

    Missed Cruise Connection Benefit:
    We will reimburse you for Covered Expenses, up to the amount shown in the schedule, should you miss your cruise departure as a result of the cancellation or delay of 3 or more hours of all regularly scheduled airline flights due to inclement weather.

    Although this particular policy would not cover the situation you have experienced, we do have other plans that could, depending on your trip details. Two weeks before my scheduled departure, I fell and broke my elbow, so the trip had to be cancelled. I called Travelex and they emailed me the forms for my doctor to fill out. He did so, I returned them to Travelex, and within a month I received a check in full for my claim amount. It was a pretty open-and-shut case, and it went without a hitch. I am satisfied and grateful for the prompt and smooth handling of my claim.

I was very pleased with the plan and would recommend it to others. A suggestion I might make is to tell customers when they take out the plan to be sure and save their flight and cruise plan since it is asked for if a claim is filed. I was not prepared for that request and although everything worked out well, it might have been easier if had not thrown out those things.
